We know that it is oftentimes more convenient to bring your children to the same dentist as the parents and we encourage you to bring yours to our practice. The ADA recommends that children see a dentist by their first birthday. However, we find that unless there is cause for concern, most children have a more enjoyable first visit between ages two and three.
At their first visit, we take a no-pressure approach. We like to show our little patients everything that we are going to use in a fun and non-threatening environment. We aim to polish teeth, do an exam, and place topical fluoride varnish. We start taking xrays when their first adult molars are erupted (around age 6) or if there is cause for concern.
If the child needs a cavity treated, we are oftentimes able to compete this procedure with the laser, requiring no anesthetic! (see Laser Dentistry) In certain circumstances, we understand that it would be better for the patient to see a pediatric specialist and will happily discuss this option with parents.
